We need a lot more information. Is the tank cycled? How did the betta originally get eaten? By what? If the fish that killed him is still in the tank I fear you will have the same problem this time around.

So sorry to hear about old Gil! That's awful! I'm sure you're really bummed cuz Gil was your pet for a long time. He was 4, right?

So you got a new Gil and a new 10g tank then? I don't remember what tank you had old Gil in. If this is a brand new tank you'll need to cycle it as you probably know. I think you'll need a heater if you don't have one already. The Aquarium eBook on this site is a good reference for cycling if you need it.

We still don't know what filtration you have on that tank. You are going to receive a lot of very good information if you can help us help you.

Absolutely! Thanks for the clarification.

Skarloeysmom has good information. Bettas are tropical fish so you will need a heater if you don't have one already.

Watch your water parameters carefully so that you can monitor the cycle.

How old is he? He should be young when you make the attempt.
