Really Hobbs, That sucks! Which side did you try the dull or shiny? Or did you try both? I thought I seen someone else on here with that and it didn't look half bad. I could be wrong though.
I tried posterboard and it did the same thing but I had some black sheets of card stock and it works well...but I dont know how big of a tank your trying to cover mines a 20 gal so it wasnt a problem.

My 29g has posterboard, and i love the way it looks, the only problem is the flash from the camera makes it look greyish, but in person it looks good. Really accents the white sand and makes the fish pop.

A nice way to do the backing is using sticky back plastic - easy to remove and change color when you feel like it (Blue's seem to be the in thing at the moment)
Or you can just simply paint the glass at the back - if you love a black backing blackboard paint is fab
You could spraypaint the posterboard with flat paint.

I used a dark blue posterboard on my 10g live bearer tank. I don't see any discoloration on it. But, I dont use a flash on pics, so I don't know how that would work with a flash.

I think some posterboard has a darker shiney side and I'll try to find some of that. Mine is just blaaaa on both sides. I did some the foam board sheets in black that look pretty good.
