If I can find a taker for half the load, do you still have any for sale at that price? Would still need to do some other reasearch to keep my tank healthy, but I think shrimp are better than worse for my setup.

The shrimp arrived this morning. All (or at least most, haven't released them yet) appear alive and well. In fact they seem anxious to get out of the bag and back into a tank. I'd say I'm glad I got the 2nd tank as some of these are small enough to appear as food for my Tetras. lol
Thanks so much!

They are best kept alone, if you have lots of cover they can be kept with small fish.
The tiny babies were extra.
Enjoy!

hells yeah babies. I thought i was looking at shrimp poop then it started swimming. there's a bunch of them. I'm going to need to do something with my filter... I thought the small ones were small didn't realize there'd also be microscopic sized ones. I'll look around on the site for suggestions on how to rig the pump, but if happen to see this let me know what you do with yours. Thanks man.

I use sponge filters in shrimp tanks. Cut a piece of sponge about 3x the width of you intake, with a sharp knife make a hole in the center and slide onto the intake. You can also wrap a piece of fine mesh around the intake. Either way it will need to be cleaned often

Hopefully this is my last question... The really really little things swimming around, could they be insects? I went out and purchased a magnifying glass to make sure I wasn't putting something harmful into my tank. They look like little 'pods' swimming around like a flea or something. Obviously they can't be too harmful cause they coexist in your tank... or maybe thats what the babies look like??? They are just so small and move about so quickly they're really hard to identify. I never had live plants and I read about snails and plants all the time, wasn't sure if there was more to look out for. Just wanted to double check before releasing them into their new home. Thanks.

Think I'll have to do that too..... Does nylon stocking works too ? I think I've read something bout that.... gotta be brand new, wash in water (no soap) and then, fix it up to the intake ? Am I right ?
Btw, Still waiting for mine to arrive.... Ohhh I'm sooo darned excited ! ... lol :19:

I put in sponge for now since I had an unused one laying about, but i think black stocking would be a better final solution since the yellow sponge stands out in the tank.

OK, through some research online I believe they are Daphina, which is fine with me. Free food source. But if you know for sure I'd be receptive to knowing 100% what they are.

Folks who got shrimp from Algenco and are happy with them should give him a postive seller rating. Its under 'Posts' on the upper right. Says 'Rating'. Would be nice to do, and positive seller ratings can add up to a medal.

Just received an order of shrimp and some plants. This order was everything i expected and more. I think one of the females had fry in the bag cause there are lots of tiny ones in addition to the thirty, and some loose eggs. No problems with anything, the only con i had was a found a pest snail in the plants, but i just ploped in a tank i have just for them, and i havent seen any since.

Megan, I think they will always be food for the gourami's. I doubt you will ever be able to keep them together. I am going to add some neon's to my shrimp tank but won't be putting them back with any other fish anymore. I lost 3/4 of mine being in my community tank. I never saw my tetra's bothering them but the platy was snooping about the java moss constantly and I'm sure he picked off most of the young ones.

Oh man!!!!!!!
I am now totaly heartbroken. After lenghty discussions with various departments of the customs, the official told me it is illegal to have freshwater shrimps in SA.
I so much wanted those beauties.....
SO now all those rumours are confirmed. No shrimps for me.
I am gonna get my SW tanks running now......and I will need a lot of advice.
MeganL3985
05-15-2008, 05:50 PM
I wonder why its illegal to have them in SA?
Boertjie
05-16-2008, 05:52 AM
Apparently if the sand of the aquarium are cleaned and the dirty water contain eggs it can get in the water drainage system. Should they get in the rivers the shrimps could multiply very fast and cause erosion. That was the comment from the official. I will get to the correct official reason and post it here on AC.
You all must enjoy your shrimps and ...........count your blessings!

Cherry shrimp have become quite a problem in Hawaii as an invasive species. Never underestimate the potential damage a non-native critter can do to an ecosystem. Worst-case scenario, look at the cane toads in Australia.

Red Cherry is really hardy and very prolific. I can understand why they setup such regulation, but they should allow the less hardy shrimp to be imported.

It's been a few months. My shrimp are doing great.
I had them in tank that was swallowed by moss. I moved as many as I could catch to a new tank (about 60 or so). I can still see about 10 at any given time in the tank that got swamped with java moss.
I've been giving the moss away, so I'm sure I've given a lot of shrimp away. Thanks again!!
My shrimp are now in a 30G tank. With an under gravel filter with reverse flow.
My substrate sucks though. It's river rock colored. But hey!! whatever is free :)

I've had mine for over a month now. After several initial deaths, the shrimp are doing well. I received a berried female in my initial group and several babies survived. Since then I've had two females carrying and am expecting more babies within the next couple weeks. Side note: The RCS look great on black sand.

Glad to hear they're doing ok, Cherries are tough, a few may be lost acclimating to different water chemistry but they will adjust and flourish.

Do you know where I can get jumbo shrimp? and will they breed?
This is a very old thread. But hey, i will respond anyways. Adult cherry shrimp do not ship well at all, you would be better ordering little babies or finding some adult ones in a petstore near you.

Please start a new thread in the shrimp forum. This thread is now 3 years old if not 4 years old.
