View Full Version : I'm such a softie...

A month ago I bought platies. I decided right away that I wasn't going to go to extreme lengths to keep any of the fry and I would just let nature take its course.

But then tonight came. I was removing algae and dead leaves from my plants when I saw it...a single fry. I showed my husband and then shrugged it off. "Neat," I thought. "I wonder if he'll make it."

Yeah, that didn't last long. After watching my platies chase him around for 5 minutes and him doing a pretty good job of hiding, I just couldn't let it go. So now I have a small tupperware container floating in my tank, loosely attached to the side with a bent paperclip. It's only a makeshift solution and I know it won't work for more than a couple of days, but I just wanted to give the little guy a chance.

Yep, I'm a softie.

(of course, both of my platies still look fat, so maybe there's more where he came from...oh dear...)

Oh, they aren't done yet, just wait! You'll have plenty of fry.

Not sure I understand your tupperware solution though. Can you explain it again?

I took a picture. :11: I don't have anything resembling a breeding setup, so I know it's not a great solution, but I'm hoping it will work for the time being. There's no filtering or water movement in there, but hopefully with just one little guy in there for now, it will be okay. Do you think?

EDIT: Also, approximately how long does it take a platy to finish giving birth? I've been watching both of my girls for the last half hour since I discovered the fry and I'm not seeing any more. But they both still look very pregnant.

EDIT EDIT: ALSO, I've only used that tupperware container for quick dips in the tank to get water for testing or priming my filter or something similar. It has been washed in the dishwasher though (a long time ago). Should I be worried about it sitting in my tank? I'm always paranoid about introducing toxins into my tank.

I'd make sure to change that water out daily just in case. Just dump the water into the tank and scoop up some new water. Be careful not to drop the little guy in though!

Livebearers like platys and guppies breed like crazy. Pretty much introduce male. Introduce female. Wait. Fry!

And then there were two. :hmm3grin2orange: I'm heading for bed in about an hour or so, and my tank light is already off for the night, so I don't expect to save them all, but I guess I'll try to collect the ones I see. I really don't know what I'm going to do with them, but I guess I'll figure that out tomorrow. :c2:

I'm not entirely sure I understand your first statement, but I am saving as many as I can and if I get more than the two I have, I will probably need homes for them. But, I'm not sure I want to dive into the realm of shipping fish just yet. They'll probably just end up at my LFS.

And congratulations. :)
