I have some filmy, cobwebby sort of stuff hanging off one of my plants - its a slightly red leafed affair - would need to post a pic to really describe it. Wondering what it is and if I need to do anything about it. Its almost invisible and only in evidence on one stem of this plant at the top near the surface, sort of gently rippling in the current.

Any ideas?

What kind of plants is it on?

could be algae or fungus.

I really don't know - it had redish leaves and has been breaking up - since I heard red were hard to keep and I can't afford C02 system yet and it seemed to be falling apart I have removed it and the other green plants seem to be doing well.

could be cryptocoryne disease which cause plants of the cryptocoryne genera to break down and look like you describe. If it is you can expect all leaves to die before new ones grow out. (can take a while) The disease is usually triggered by moving the plants or rapid water changes.
