Not sure how we could NOT like it! Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Can you elaborate on your substrate, lighting, and fert dosing schedule? CO2?

Thanks GM72 & Cocoa Pleco (love that name) :41: :41:

The filter used is a Eheim 2028 Prof II external filter
CO2 Dennerle System
4 x TL's - Phillips 2 in the colour 830 and two in the colour 840 - Lights are on 10 hours a day

Substrate I made my own layering starting with Red French Clay then filtersand as this gives the roots a place to breathe and then a top layer of fine caviar gravel

I add my own mix of plant ferts once a week which I mixed out of different substances and chemicals such as KNO3 etc. Iron I add with Seachem Iron once a week also.

Weekly waterchange of 40%

The tank is 120 Gallons

Emmmmm think that's about it ;)

That tank is sooooo good looking! how did you do that!!!!??????

Fishalicious
10-30-2007, 12:00 PM
I can try to explain the thoughts behind this set-up but it really is not very hard to do peeps... and the tank is not majorly impressive compared to some of my friends - one of my friends just became 2nd in the Best Aquascaping contest in the whole of Holland

Might be good to start with the plants used:
1. Riccia fluitans
2. Microsorum pteropus 'windelow'
3. Microsorium pteropus
4. Anubias nana var. Baterii
5. Hydrocotyle leucocephala
6. Ludwigia repens
7. Hygrophila guianensis.
8. Nymphaea lotus var. Rurbra
9. Cryptocoryne petchii
10. Bacopa amplexicaulus
11. Alternathera rosaefolia
12. Rotala indica
13. Cladaphora
14. Glyceria Maxima
15. Cryptocoryne wendtii
16. Blyxa japonica
17. Elatine triandra
18. Lemna minor

I created one big focal plant to draw you in according to this:
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

I created 3 'streets' of plants - the big focal one face on - a long green lower one going off to the left which ends at a black backing wall which I left open so the 'street' draws you in - and to the right a red 'street' as contrast going to the right.

Streets are a row of of the same plant with shorter plants at the front building up to larger - this draws you into the tank

When I pick plants I never plant two plants beside each other that have similar leaves as otherwise they can blend in together and look quite messy in my opinon - I also look at the colors of the plants and try to use plant colors beside each other that compliment - a light green plant looks great beside a red plant as it makes the red look even more stronger... you can make more of a feature of a dark coloured plant having it beside a lighter colored plant etc.

I always make a set-up on the computer before planting so when I get going remember where I wanted which plant ;)

I hope this explains the set up a little better xxx Thank you everyone x

wait, how big is this tank?

10-30-2007, 07:41 PM
Very nice Fishalicious, thanks for the link!

My uncle in Germany has kept saltwater for years and recently changed everything over to planted tanks. Although, you can get some great advice and products for planted tanks in Germany, he usually hops over the border to Winterswijk and Arnhem and sometimes goes up to Utrecht and even Amsterdam.

The Dutch, truly are the masters of the planted tank! :thumb:

Fishalicious
10-30-2007, 08:09 PM
it's 4.5 feet length - 20 high and 20 width - around 125 Gallon

That's what I've been trying to say my tank ain't that great LOL But I am over the moon with all of your lovely comments xxx

This is my friends that won 2nd place in the whole of Holland:

Absolutly stunning!

Now, one thing I've always wanted to know about tanks like that is how the heck do you clean/vacum the gravel? Or do you just leave it as is and the plants take care of it?

Fishalicious
10-30-2007, 08:48 PM
Fish Poop - equals fertilizer ;)

If you hold the vacuum just above the lower plants and around the roots all the muck that isn't supposed to be in there comes up easy

squirt_12
10-30-2007, 10:46 PM
...speech less.....i would NEVER beable to get my plants to look like that.....jeeze......just amazing....

10-30-2007, 10:48 PM
That is beautiful. I wish my planted tank looked like that.
How big is it and how many watts do you have on it?

Fishalicious
10-30-2007, 10:52 PM
it's 4.5 feet length - 20 high and 20 width - around 125 Gallon

I have 4 TL's of 38 Watt in the hood ;)

Starting to sound like a car... :c5:

Forgot to also mention - my substrate is only about 2cm at the front and 8-9cm at the back of the tank this also adds to the depth and all the muck rolls forward making it easier to clean

squirt_12
10-30-2007, 10:54 PM
um....could you plant the tank and then send it to me please???? i would appriciate it.....thanks..... jokin'...jokin' lol.lol...i wish that it was that easy to do...you make it sound slike a piece of cake. lol.

A340

Thats what I figured, just wanted to see if my assumptions were correct. ;)

So, how long did it take for you to achieve that tank and how many attempts? Perhaps, also a list of equipment you are using and what kind of supplements (and how much/when) would be of great interest to many of us.

Fishalicious
10-31-2007, 12:46 PM
It took only 1 attempt as I had planned it beforehand on paper from pictures of the plants online... I planted it all and within 3 months it was as you see here in the pictures.

I fertilize with my own ferts mixed from KN03, KH2PO4 etc. once a week after a 40% waterchange.

It is filtered with a Eheim Prof II 2028 cannister filter

It really is not hard to do or achieve....just plan beforehand... as I said if I can do it anyone can <grins>
