Does anyone have one of these? I've read that they are very peaceful and best suited in a community tank. I was just wondering because it seems like its hit and miss with puffers in general. I am trying to find a suitable snail chomper for my community tank stocked with tetras and cories. Some references say that they are fin nippers, some say they only get aggressive at feeding time, some say they only mess with large fin fish like gouramies (sp?) and angels. I'm really looking to hear from someone who actually has tried one in a community tank or at least with other fish. All the references in the world don't compare to actual experiances.

Thank you, I am leaning towards him, I just have to find a steady source of snails as I don't like the idea of having to trim teeth. Did you have to do this or did yours get enough hard stuff to keep them down?

Your in luck!! :)
I've been raising puffers for a long time now.
I can tell you, they generally are peaceful. Sometimes.
I don't see much waste on the gravel, and I feed mine dead raw shrimp from the store.
They are salt water, and they are very nutritious to my fresh water puffer fishes.
I had a guppy in with them before... but they never ate them in a few months.. so I said "what they hey... I'll put the guppies in my big tank"
So then I did... but I just fed the a diet of shrimp, and small snails that the person at the pet store gave them to me for free since they are heavy spreaders.
After that.. I put in my silver dollars, and the puffers freaked the silver dollars out.
I moved my SD's in there so then I could try and keep them in with my puffers so I could prevent my SD's from killing all of my plants.
Although that failed, and I moved them back.
2 months later, I gave my SD's away to a friend.
Oh, you should always keep a pleco in with the puffer fishes :) they aren't going to be eaten because I have on in my tank.
Though it seems lazy and the pleco only moves around at night.

markbob, by now you have probably already bought the puffer, but I would actually suggest two or three clown loaches. They absolutely love snails, and after the snails are gone, they will clean up quite a bit of food leftover on the bottom as well.
