Has yours jumped out of its tank?
LOL, fair enough.
Actually after reading an earlier thread of futureboys, I think he wants to do an open top betta tank, but unsure if they can jump.

Seeing they are kept in tiny little square open betta jars at the LFS and never look very happy in there I don't think they have a tendency to jump otherwise I reckon there would be a whole load of betta's all over the LFS's floor :ezpi_wink1: ok enough with the sarcasm...
I have kept betta's in open tanks without probs - only ever saw one jump out once but that was because a fly was flying around above the tank - yes betta's will eat and eat and eat all day if they could ;)
usually they dont jump but some do..I have only had one female do it and never jumped again(put a cover on lol)I think its something to be careful of b/c you are taking the risk of finding him on the floor someday but I also think that bettas are not the big jumpers that they are made out to be. Its kinda hit or miss with the personality of your betta some will jump all the time some never will.

I would have to say that in my experience, most freshwater fish will jump. I've had a dwarf gourami, hatchet, and betta fish all jump out of their homes on me (I try not to take it personally since I *do* keep their water clean!) The dwarf gourami made it, but the betta and the hatchet weren't so lucky since I wasn't there when it happened. I can't tell you how much I shuddred when I found my favourite marble hatchet in my dog's mouth. I think Betta's need tall containers, and I never thought about it but I how do they survive in those bowls at the pet store without jumping?

Rob scared our betta last night (I think) and he jumped. Not straight out the bowl but he made a pretty good splash. I had one of my neons jump out of their bowl (when I was cleaning their tank)...he wasn't so lucky :(

Ketchup jumps at my finger when I feed him but not enough to get out of the tank. I've never seen Skarloey jump.

Why not just use mosquito netting / fly wire mesh for a lid?

I think most fish will jump for one reason or another, but Bettas certainly will. We have one that attacks his food so hard that he comes out of the water nearly every time, which I suppose technically isn't jumping, but we've had plenty of others that seem to prefer life in a drier environment
