View Full Version : Filtration and Hospital tank query?

After a wee think about my tank and how its running I am starting to wonder a few things about my filtration. Now I do remember someone saying not too long ago 'You can never have too much filtration', which I completely understand and agree upon!
When I got my new tank after my 140L leaking out onto my bedroom floor, I got my 250L and new substrate and other bits and pieces. With this purchase I also got a fluval 305 filter, which btw is great!
When I started my new tank I was starting from absolute scratch and had to cycle for a while first. I got my new tank filled up and the new filter running but to boost my cycle I left my old filter on there aswell to give some of the old tanks stuff back into the new one. Which worked very well too!
Now i am wondering if it would be okay to take off the old filter to put onto my smaller tank (I think a 10G) with a bit of sand on the bottom and a small heater to use as a hospital tank. At the moment my plan is to keep it as a hospital tank but currently the only planing is that when i need it I will have to do the whole emergency get the tank from downstairs fill it and put the fish in. Id rather be more prepared than that.

The only concern is that I dont know if the fluval has enough grunt to keep my water in the tank atm to good enough standards on its own?
It is rated to 300L but thats just whats written on the box. Would it be a better idea for me to just get a new filter (maybe just a crappy sponge filter) to use on my hospital tank?

I also have to get a good set of meds just incase something happens to my fish. I know there was a post earlier written up with a good list of things to have in case of emergency.
I will inquire at my PFS (preferred fish shop!! LOL just because My LFS is well... crap) about what sorts of meds and things I should have there, as some of the ones listed might have different names here in New Zealand.

Im done ranting for now but if anyone has any information or helpful advice for what I should do given my current situation it would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
