that red algae? it often occurs in tanks under 4 months old, and certain snails can take care of it and eat it. ive barely had any but the little i did i just scraped off with my mag float.
there almost always will be algae on your LS, its part of the reef. i personally like the small pieces of sparse algae coloring on my argonite in the 55g

I had it bad for a while too. It hit my tank at about 2 and a half months, and it took me about 3 weeks to get rid of it.
There are chemical treatments that are supposed to work, but they do not attack the underlying problems. I think the two most common problems are lack of flow, and too much dissolved organics in the water.
In my case, I increased the overall flow in my tank and cut my feedings in half, and the problem slowly went away. I also increased the frequency of my water changes to help remove the nitrates and phosphates.
Good luck,
Oh, and yes, your sand will return to its white color!

coach had good ideas too. the algae is from diatoms so less feeding and higher frequent water changes will help
