I think I am going to start one this weekend, I am going to get a filter, some 1" clear tubing, and a piece of PVC pipe with caps and of course the filter stuff to go inside such as carbon and the media rings and filter pads. Anyone ever attempted one of these? I am thinking it would be a cheaper and over all a good filter.

i posted a DIY about 5 months ago on it. i used a plastic fish food jar, gravel mixed with carbon, and a old fat vacuum tube. i placed a tubing connected to a airpump with a airstone on the end

I have 2 old vacuums I don't use anymore, think I can use them to hold the media? Then I would only need the media and water pump.

Me and my neighbor made a livewell out of some PVC, polyfill, a 35 gallon rubbermaid tub, and a sump pump. The pump ran hot though, and it killed a bunch of our bait off.

I just want a small water pump, I took the plastic piece off of one of the vaccums that holds the tube to it and I placed it on the open end of another vaccum so you have a compartment there and a tube coming off each end. I am going to put a pump on one end to suck the water out push it through the compartment which will hold filter media and then spit it back out into the tank, wala! A home made filter, will post pictures as it goes along.
