What other fish are in the tank with him? That doesn't look good at all. I look at the picture very close but because it's so blurry, I can't tell if it's like skin missing or if it is like a tumor. Maybe when you have time you can get a better picture of it? I think that and a little more info are the keys to solving your mystery...The Case of the Gourami w/ the swollen lips...lol No seriously we need to know stuff like; What are the other fish in the tank? What could he have scraped himself on in the tank to make this happen? What exactly does it look like to you? Is he still eating? When did you see it first? Do you think he might have fought with another fish? How are your water conditions? Has there been any changes?

What are the other fish in the tank?
Ok well his tank mates are in my sig.
What could he have scraped himself on in the tank to make this happen?
There are real rocks in the tank that he could have scraped himself on.
What exactly does it look like to you?
It just looks really swollen and red.
Is he still eating?
He is still eating and swimming normally.
When did you see it first?
I first saw it yesterday.
Do you think he might have fought with another fish?
I dont think he could have fought with another fish, he has always been very sociable and friendly to everyone in the tank.
How are your water conditions?
My water conditions: ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate was 8, but i did a water change today and back to 0.
Has there been any changes?
the only changes were my rams had ick so i had to treat the tank for a week (one didnt make it :scry:, but the other recovered nicely)
Sorry, i cant get a better pic, he wont sit still, but there looks to be a couple scales hangin off and the swelling has gone down a little bit since medicating the tank. I think what might have happened was he was darting for food and ran into the rock. What would be some signs of it being a tumor?
I think i got it all lol

looks like either bacterial or fungal mouth rot
EDIT- i just read you said it is red, so its probably bacterial

it looks pretty bad, so i would say step up to heavy meds like maracyn and other strong meds

ok well i dont know when i can get to the petstore next so i dont have much of a choice, but it does seem to be improving, its not as swollen or red as it was yesterday

if its improving, add salt and keep the water really clean. the bacteria that cause rot cant survive in clean water

Hope your fish makes it. looks like a really nice fish. Im going to get some meds for my tank as a precaution. Ive seen a post in the forums of a nice medkit for fish just to have even if you never use it... better to be safe than sorry when/if something like this happens in my aquarium eh :-)

just an update:
after treating my gourami with melafix for a few days she has made a full recover and there is no more swelling or redness. I guess she just scraped her nose is all

i doubt it was a scrape. it sounds like a bacterial infection to me too. just keep up w/ your water changes and keep an eye on him. when i first started keeping fish i had a blue gourami that had the same thing. once i started doing more regular water changes he did fine.
