I've gone thru the diatoms, then the spot algae and now into the black. How can a person get rid of this stuff permanently. Using excel, lights on 8 hours and ferts. Darned stuff is annoying.

Unfortunately yu can get it to where you don't see it, but it is still there in spores, etc.

It is the constant battle we all fight. I saw a signature on another forum. It went something like....

I have lost the battle with algae, but the war goes on. I am raising an army, an army with many legs, an army of Amanos....

i been having a problem with what i assume is algae. My 10gal keeps getting cloudy then turns green. it happened before and i did some big water changes and got it cleared up for about a week then it happened again. its the only tank that does it too, my other tanks are perfectly clear.

That would be Green Water. You have too many nutrients and or phosphates.

Here a lot of people are trying to culture green water for the daphnia and you want to get rid of yours.... LOL

Lots of water changes, I would make sure you are not over feeding. Plants will also help some with the problem as they will use up some of the nutrients. You can also have your lights on for less time.

Also make sure no light from a window is hitting it.

When will they come out with the magic pill that will get rid of all these algaes? Keeping house plants is a lark compared to tank plants.

Has anyone ever tried a product called Algone to control algae? One of my coworkers swears the stuff is the best thing since sliced bread.

I've heard its great to kill algae and plants.

Haven't used it myself so I do not know that for a fact though.

I've thought about that stuff myself. Sounds to me as it's more for tank problems than plant problems, tho. Like green water, etc.

just checked my filter today....the part that is to stay in it to keep the beneficial bacteria had algae growing on it.....might be why i keep getting green water, lol. so i took a bucket of dechlorinated water and rinsed it out the best i could. i did use algae destroyer the other evening and it cleared up the green water i had. i just put some in at lights out and by morning the tank was clear.
