Well today at a LFS they had purple firefish on sale for $29 so I got one. He is about half an hour into acclimation and he looks great.
The LFS I went to is one of the ones I try to avoid but they had just got them in and they were each in their own tanks and looked very healthy so I went for it. The price was obviously also very good so hopefullly I have good luck with him.

wow, they are a lot cheaper out here????? I see them for $19 here in Los Angeles, I wonder why?
