View Full Version : Pair introduction
Well i have finally let my female loose with my male( first she was in a container in the tank until my male made a bubble nest.) At first he was real gentle and tolerent of her and now hes chasing her and flaring but hasnt done any damage only chasing. I have some plants that she hides in. The female has been released for abot 3 and a half hours. Does this sound like typical behavior for this time?
She did follow him to the nest once an they paused next to eachother for a moment then both swam away. And shes also been inspecting his bubble nest.

yes...usually their first time they will fight...it may take up to 2 days for them to spawn..sometimes they wont even spawn their first time. they may just fight.
But if she is checking out the nest and has dark stripes (| | |) that way then she is ready. Also if they are swimming together they are showing good signs.
Good luck.
Keep us posted.
P.S.
WHat size of tank and how much water do you have them in?
EDIT- during this stage do not feed them as it will distract them. Also when they are wraping def. do not feed them.
I kinda did a container thing like you had....holds about a gallon or mabey a little more Im not totally sure more importantly the female has enough room where she can get away from the male for a little while and rest.I was reading about thai breeding and many spawn in like a tuperware bowl then move the fry to bigger containers or ponds so I thought I would do a combo of american style and thai. They havnt actually fought hes just flaring and chasing no real nips.
what I find odd is that hes fanning the nest like there are already eggs in it.
..shes light colored so no bars but shes plump and her ovipositor is sticking out.

well mine never fanned the nest....he just took a mouth full of eggs and rolled them in his mouth and spit them back in...are you sure he is 'fanning' it or is he just swimming under it. Cause mine never left from underneath of it he stood his guard.
Well is your 'container' (lol) longer than it is tall??? caus then need shallow but long container or tanks to breed in. THe shallow water helps trigger them into breeding.
Yeah move the fry once they are about 1-2 weeks old to a biger container. But once in the bigger container just add a little bit of water a day to slowly make the level go up. So liek add more water after every water change seeing as you will pretty well have to do daily water changes to keep amonia down.
Hope this helps some.
P.S.
Thatis good that they are nort fighting at all. Like mine fought so bad that the female had like no bottom fin left. Then she finally let him wrap around her and they went on from there wrapping for about 4 hours. lol.
It takes so long for the whoel process to happen..
and it will happen right early in the morning. like around 6-8 in the morning. at the break of dawn. right when the sun comes up.
Yea thats how the container is and the water is at about 5in or so not exact but shallow enough.
thanks for the help Ill just have to wait an see.....Im too impatient for this stuff lol and its only been a few hours.
Oh I also read about addin a few drops of tea have you ever heard of this and is it like regular drinking tea? What else will trigger them to spawn?

yeah i know blu i am the same way...like every hour i went and looked at them to see if they were wraping. lol.
But just leave them alone and try not to walk past the tank very often as you will scare them.
Also do you have a half of a styrofoam cup in there for them to build the bubblenest in?? cause you should have one. It will help them make one. Also you could even go lower than 5inches if you want; I had about 2-2.5 inches of water in mine and they did fine.
what temp do you have the tank at?? they need about 78-85 degrees. That is best. it can be around 75 but the closer to 80 the better.
Yep there is half a cup in there with bubblenest built and Im pretty sure hes fanning b/c he waves himself under it in a s motion but stays in the same spot.
temp is about 76 my room stays warmer than the rest of the house so its easier to keep bettas in there.

ok well it if it looks like he is fanning it then get a flash light and a magnify glass and see if you can see some white dots (eggs) they are kinda white and clear
Nope I dont see any eggs mabey hes just practicing lol be nice if there were some real eggs though mabey he will spawn tonight he did wait till late night early morning to finish his nest mabey it was because I left a dim light on so he wouldnt become completley inactive.

yeah he is probably just keeping his bubblenest clean, maybe they will spawn. Ususally they spawn in the morning though. And all i had on mine was s dim light that i leave on all day. a lamp. lol.
Ok thanks for answering my questions I will post when anything happens.

so.....so...so....has anything happened yet??? i need details. lol.
Have they been doing good so far???
sorry didnt realize this had another post but no eggs. The male stopped chasing the female and maintaing his nest( by the way when he stopped building his nest she was not happy...started popping the rest.) They sarted getting along again and were very peacefull on the day before I took out the female. And he didnt rip any of her fins so thats a plus...she just started to make herself right at home but the male started looking a little depressed so I took her out yesterday ....hes active again.
Ill try again with a slightly bigger tank, higher temp, mabey get them some live brine shrimp.

well thats ok because mine did that the first time too. So well what i would do is wait about atleast a week...and feed them foods like you would if you conditioned them and then try it again...if you get a tank intime. And if you want to.
Good luck the next time. :thumb:
