Granted it's early, but it never seemed to do anything in the bag while it was 'soaking'. Is there a way to tell before you leave the store?

Does the snail smell like it is rotting? If not it may be sleeping. Snails can sleep years though...

I already dropped it into my tank. The shrimp I had in there are awfully interested in it. They jumped on it as soon as it got in there. Thats what got me worrying.

Thats normal behavior.... The shrimp may still eat it even if it is ALIVE....

If the operculum (lid to the shell itself) is closed the snail is alive.

WOOHOO!! I did check the O thingy and it was shut. Awesome news, thanks!!! I stuck some lettuce in there to see if I could coax it to move tonight to be sure.

It also appears now the shrimp appear to be cleaning off the shell. It seemed a bit slimey, probably cuz of all the crap in the LFS tank.

What kind of shrimp and what is the temp of the tank? I ask because some shrimp become very active at warmer temps and may swarm and kill a snail. Ghost shrimp come to mind as behaving as such.

Really? My ghost shrimp don't attack my apple snails.

MAY swarm and kill, and only in warmer temps. Would be a pretty cool sight though, nature at its most brutal, but at its finest at the same time.

Amen, I like to drop a net full of feeder guppies in my cichlid tank, beautiful.:c3:

That would be VERY cool. You should video that and post it!

The tank shows to be at 78. I'm still trying to completely cycle it too. A few hours from my original post the shrimp appear to have lost interest. Maybe that will change once the lights go out, but all seems well at the moment.

Hopefully they won't bother the snail at all.

Most likely they were just cleaning him up ala Finding Nemo... They smelled the algae and went after it.

Not sure if anyone is still reading this thread... Does a snail actually sleep for weeks?

From my own experience, I had some Apple snails that could "sleep" for a few days... but never seen one sleep for weeks... One thing you can do is remove it from the water... and press a little bit on the operculum with your finger... If some bubble gets out... Then, I'm sorry... else, if no bubble... might be alive... one good trick that you can do is put in into some towel outside of the tank and wait 1-2 hours... (a bit wrapped up like one folding)... it might "wake" him and if not.. well... throw it back into the tank... might wake up someday ;) ... Or your shrimps will have a snack... also, have a look for cracks into the shell (like some erosion due to water hardness... Happened to me while I was breeding Apple Snails.... had about 50-100 of them die because water wasn't "good"...)

Good luck...
