what are the things called that you use to measure the salinity with??
Also how much would a cheap one cost??

Hydrometers. You can get a cheap glass floating one for about $4, an expensive plastic one you fill up with your water is anywhere from $10-20, depending on the brand.

Anytime. Thats what I'm here for.:c12:

I'd splurge and get a refractometre right off the bat...

...save the $10 you'd spend on a hydrometre...put it towards the refractometre...

But with refractometers, you have to worry about the calibration solution, and all that stuff, not to mention they are expensive. A nice $10 hydrometer will fit the hobbists needs.

Calibration is very easy.

I bought a 'good' hydrometre. Waste of money. A decent refractometre is $50...and there's no point in having a hydrometre if you're always second guessing yourself...it's crucial to have the salinity the same during the week while evaporation is occurring and you're doing topoffs...not to mention while mixing salt for water changes...

I don't think this is a case where you can make do with a cheaper bit of equipment, esp. since we're working with such small amounts of water, where every mistake is magnified...

Incorrect, drum. Decent refractometers are self and temperature calibrated.

well the only thing that i would be using it for would be for my fiddler crabs. So i would just need a cheap one. lol.

But thanks for all of the feed back, it was very helpful.

I use the plastic one you fill, don't remember the price but it works well.:11:
