a 4 year old betta is TOO old to breed.

yep, and storebought ones are often already that age so you could instantly try to breed them

yeah well i had mine for about 2-3 months before i attempted to breed them.

But if you are thinkiong and get some younger bettas then you have to conditiont hem befroe you breed them.

frozen/freeze dried blood worms, frozen/live brine shrimp, earthworms (little ones), freeze dries tubifex worms, and normal flakes or pellets are good foods to feed them to condition them. Give them about 2-5 feeding a day (very small amounts) and do this for about 2 weeks. When you feed them...change it up everytime....don't always feed them the same thing.

Hope this helps.

frozen around me you can get about 33 tablets for $5

eggs: they depend on how many you get but they are more expensive than frozen ones. But...the live ones help put them in breeding mood. So if you can i would hatch your own. If you do hatch your own do a little bit of research before doing it though.
