When we finally get our tank set up, we definitely want to get a pictus catfish. Can we get only one, will it be happy by itself or would it be better to get at least three?

They like to be in groups and you will need a very large tank. They are fast swimmers and are very mobile. What size tank are you planning?

We are going to have a 84 gallon tank 36 x 18 x 30.

Get six. Pictus reach five to eight inches, depending on the population. Keep away from wide-bodied fish like angles and discus, as the pictus distrbs them with their long whiskers.

I have heard pictus ctafish get territorial with each other as they get older. Can anyone confirm this?

Don't know where you heard that Ed, as pictus cats school in their thousands in nature.
To my experience six get along fine all their lives.

I've heard they get aggressive when kept singly. When in groups they school.

Fish such as rainbow sharks and red-tail sharks get territorial as they get older but I haven't heard that about the pictus.
