Hi,
My nephew's Betta is really ill...his belly is bulging and he barely moves anymore. He is sitting in a plant branch near the top of the water...just trying to survive.

I took the fish home because I have more time to care for him... his water has been treated recently but there are five more days to go (a 7 day bacterial treatment). I tried to boil a few peas and extract the insides into little pieces. Unfortunately, the pea "guts" don't float! They keep sinking and the betta can't get to them fast enough. Is it possible that I'm not boiling the peas long enough (2minutes in boiling water/microwave)?

I would like to try the pea remedy to help him relieve his belly...I am sure he has eaten too much food and can't get rid of it. Poor fella.....I want to repair him so badly.

Any advice on the peas would be very appreciated.

If he looks constipated and has stopped eating be on the look out for symptoms of dropsy. If his scales start to pinecone out you need to start dropsy treatment right away. I thought my betta was constipated too when he started to get dropsy that's why I mention this.

But here's the info and treatment I used when my Betta had dropsy [Only Registered Users Can See Links.] a year and a half ago. I used Maracyn-2 instead of the med. they mention and followed the rest of their recommendations and it worked very quickly.

Thanks for your comments and experience with Dropsy. I've become suspicious of a few different diseases/problems this betta may have.

He looks very "full", kind of pale/gray around his face and he is super lethargic. At times, I thought he was a goner because he is so "still". I am hoping the 7day treatment will promote some success...I have 4+days to go.

I don't know if I can add an antibiotic to water that is already being treated? I don't want to combine too many medicines at once...in fear of killing him.

What if I create a whole new tank and treat it with antibiotics...then move the betta into it from the other tank? Of course, it will be at the same temp and w/conditioned water.

I am not really sure I should just "wait this out" at the condition this sick betta is in. Sometimes, it looks like he's laboring to breath...at others, he looks like he's exhausting and just trying to rest. He would eat pellets if given to him...but I am not going to feed him for atleast 3 days to see if he can move his bowels and clear out that fat tummy.

How long have you cooked the peas in boiling water before putting them in the tank? Did you peel the pea and take only the "guts" for the feeding? I did this but it fell to the bottom of tank right away :(

Any other remedies for constipation? THANKS VERY MUCH!
