OK, can someone please provide some concrete evidence on the differences between German Blue Rams and Bolivian Rams? The reason why I'm asking is because if you go to one store, they have them labeled as G.B Rams and another one has them labeled as Bolivian Rams. The same if you search the net, one site says G.B and the other Bolivian.

In fact, the store I bought my G.B/Bolivian (???) Rams at had them labeled as Butterfly Rams, so now I'm really confused (the wonderful world of Cichlids ;) )

Thanks in advance!

i think the biggest difference is color, butterfly rams is another name for ram cichlids, german blue and bolivian is just a variety of them, im not 100% on this so hopefully some1 can clarify

They are two totally different species.
The German Blue Ram is (Microgeophagus ramirezi)
They are found in the Rio Orinoco (Venezuela) and areas of Colombia
They require softer, warmer water
The Bolivian Ram is (Microgeophagus altispinosa)
They are found in South America, Bolivia & Brazil
They are more forgiving on water parameters. They can survive in acidic and alkaline waters and can handle a wider range in temps.

They also look very differesnt, I'll try to dig up some pics of both.

Thanks for the replies guys. So I would assume (hope I'm correct on this), an easy way to distinguish the two would be that the German Blue's are more yellow towards the front than the Bolivians?

so does that mean if you had the correct water conditions for the german blue rams that bolivians would be able to cope in the same tank?

I keep them together in my 300g. I have 6 pairs of Bolivians and 4 pairs of Blues. They interact with each other very little. They are more concerned with their own species.

Bolivians also get much larger than germans.

How many would fit into a 100g?

I would put 2 pairs of each.
