Hi!

I have a 15 gallon tank, currently inhabited by 5 mollies and 2 large plecostomus. I'm planning to add salt to make the water better for the mollies, but how will this affect the plecostomus? Can they tolerate salt/brackish water? If they can handle some salt, is 1 tablespoon/5 gallon okay or should I add less?

plecostomus can tolerate salt.

add one Tablespoon salt per 5 gallons of aquarium water.

Mollies like salt water? cant they survive in non-salt water, because i had 2 before and they lasted almost a year.

yes. they can survive in freshwater but are much more sensitive if kept in freswater than they are brackish water.

Same as what william said :)

There is some debate amongst fish keepers as to exactly what is best for mollies, my parents kept theirs in FW, but other keeprs would say that they HAVE to have salt water, they can tolerate both, but they do make a lovely addition to a brackish setup and thrive in the saline water. It is generally understood that they prefer brackish water, but then they can and do breed and survice in FW setups too.

I think with mollies it is whatever yours seem to do best in and personal choice as the debate could go on forever :) lol

Didn't even react to that. (should have) Lets hope that large doesn't really mean large.

By large pleco's i'm assuming you mean 'common' pleco. Liposarcus Pardalis (L021/L023) grow huge & one let alone two will not be comfortable for long in a 15gal. Any chance of a bigger house for them.
These fish can grow in excess of two feet in length in nature & can easily reach a foot in medium sized (75gal)tank.
