I was wondering what the benefits of areation in the aquarium are? Can one have too much areation?

Aireation breaks the surface tension of water allowing gas exchange (Oxygen in, Co2 out). You could have too much for the fish to swim, certainly.

Some fish don't like highly aerated water, such as the betta. Most fish however, in my experience, appreciate the higher O2 levels. You don't want to aerate if you have live plants, though!
