I picked up two packets of Phos-x for a dollar at the store that closed... it says it removes phosphates, trates and trites. I think I will add this into the filter after my cycle, or should I add it now? Has anyone had experiece with this?

Do it after cycle, before algae attacks. Those ferric oxide pellets work just fine.

I got some kind of algae ball today...it looks like a sponge, I forget the name of it. However, it removes phosphates and nitrates.
It kind of just floats around in the water.

It's a SW type algae thing. It is a real common name, I have heard of it before. I will get the name of it. It reminds me of a tumbleweed but just for SW.

I'm using RowaPhos, it's super expensive though, but sucks up phosphates like a Rainbow vacuum.

Let me know how that stuff works for ya

I havent seen ANYTHING that will just remove nitrates, besides plants.

These: http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/4912
and others available are commonly used by those with large fish in large tanks to keep nitrates down to zero between water changes.

Bill, I use phosphate removing pellets in my freshwater, planted tank. They say the phosphate are first absorbed and then the pellets split open and reduce silicates. Dropped my phosphates from 2 to .50. I just poured some in a piece of nylon stocking and tied it off.

So i guess the general consensus is that after the cycle is complete, add one phos-x pack. yes?
